Forty Years of Documenting Berkeley History

This exhibit includes a wide variety of materials – historical “gems” – collected over the past four decades, concentrating on several topical areas: schools, businesses, politics and government, performing arts, and family life, as well as some highlights from the Berkeley Historical Society’s own history.

The Society is celebrating its 40th anniversary throughout 2018. A group of local history enthusiasts – starting as the ad-hoc Berkeley Centennial Celebration Committee – founded the Society in 1978 without a permanent home or collection. In August 1992, after many years of existing in school district temporary buildings, we finally moved to the current location in the Veterans’ Memorial Building at 1931 Center Street.
